Emergency Plumbing
in Pinetown
Emergency plumbing in Pinetown, for a burst pipe, a geyser letting go, or sewage coming up through a floor drain in a storm. The first move is yours and takes a minute. After that, you get an honest answer about when someone can be with you.
Request a call-outWhat counts as a plumbing emergency
Water you cannot stop, water near electricity, or sewage inside the house. A burst supply pipe, a geyser leaking through the ceiling, a toilet or floor drain pushing sewage back up, a pipe split by a fallen tree or a shifting retaining wall after heavy rain. A dripping tap or a slow basin is not an emergency, and you will be told so honestly rather than charged as if it were.
There is no round-the-clock promise on this site. When you get in touch, you hear whether someone can come and roughly when, and what to do until then.
Typical emergency call-outs
Floodwater coming in under a door is not a plumbing fault. Move what you can, keep away from wet electrics, and call a plumber once the water has somewhere to go.
Three emergencies, three different first moves
In a Pinetown storm, three very different problems can look alike from inside the house. Each has its own first move, and the wrong one can make things worse.
A burst pipe or a failed geyser is clean water under pressure. The first move is to stop the supply: close the main stopcock, and if the geyser is involved, switch it off at the board too, because an element left on in an emptying tank can burn out. Then run a cold tap downstairs to empty what is left in the pipes.
Sewage rising through a shower, floor drain or toilet during heavy rain is a different problem. Nothing in the house is under pressure. The drain simply has nowhere to go, because the sewer below it is full. Every flush and every running tap adds to what comes back up, so the first move is to stop using water in the house. eThekwini's Sewage Disposal By-law forbids storm water in the sewage system, yet illegal connections still carry rain into it, and conservation groups watching the sewers have described pump stations swamped during storms.
Storm water at the door is not plumbing at all. Water running across the floor from outside is a drainage and grading problem, and nothing inside the house is causing it. Lift valuables and electrical items off the floor, stay clear of wet sockets, and leave the plumbing alone until the rain eases.
Then there is the road. During the level 6 storm of 13 March 2025, authorities urged people to avoid crossing bridges and low-lying areas prone to flooding, and that applies to anyone driving to you as well. If the way to your house runs through a flooded dip, you will hear that honestly and be talked through keeping things safe until the water drops, instead of being promised an arrival time nobody can keep.
If the fault is on the City's side, report it once and keep the reference number. eThekwini's water services line is 080 13 13 013, the toll-free number is 080 311 1111, and the WhatsApp number is 073 148 3477.
Burst: close the stopcock. Sewage rising: stop using water. Storm water at the door: lift things up and leave the plumbing alone.
What happens when you get in touch
Kept short, because nobody wants a long page in an emergency.
The first move, together
The call starts with stopping the damage: where the stopcock is, whether the geyser is off, whether to stop using water.
An honest time
You hear whether someone can come and roughly when. If it cannot be tonight, you hear that too, with what to do until morning.
Made safe, then priced
On site, the first job is making it safe, with the burst isolated or clamped. The permanent repair is priced before it is done.
The proper repair
Done once the cause is clear. If the first visit could only make it safe, the invoice shows what is still to be done.
What changes the price of an emergency call
Emergencies cost more than booked work, and the reasons are worth knowing before anyone sets off.
When it happens
If someone is sent outside normal working hours, how that changes the charge is explained before they leave, not on the invoice.
Getting there
Flooded routes, closed roads and storm debris can change when someone can reach you, and you will be told if they do.
Making safe versus repairing
Isolating or clamping a burst is priced on its own. The permanent repair is priced once the cause is known.
Damage to put right
Ceilings, floors and paving opened in a hurry are listed separately from the plumbing, which is what an insurer will want to see.
Emergency questions
Cost first, then the questions people ask with the water still running.
How much does emergency plumbing cost in Pinetown?
More than the same work booked in advance, mostly because of when it happens and what has to be dropped to do it. How the call-out is charged, and anything extra that applies at night or at weekends, is explained before anyone sets off. Making safe and the permanent repair are priced separately.
Are you available 24 hours a day?
This site does not promise round-the-clock cover, because a promise like that is only worth something if someone actually answers. Get in touch either way, and the answer will be a plain one: whether someone is coming, roughly when, and how to keep the damage down until then.
Where is my main stopcock?
Usually on the supply pipe where it enters the property or the house: near the meter at the boundary, on an outside wall at the front, or under the kitchen sink. Find it before you need it and check that it turns, because one that has not moved in years can be stiff. If it will not close at all, make that the first thing you tell us.
Sewage is coming up through the shower drain. What do I do?
Stop using water in the house: no flushing, no taps, no washing machine. If it is raining hard, the sewer below may be full, and the backflow often stops when the rain does. Keep children and pets away and take photographs. If it carries on after the rain, or happens in dry weather, the blockage is more likely in your own drain and needs clearing.
A tree came down on a pipe in the storm. Is that an emergency?
If water is running from the pipe, yes: close the stopcock first. If the tree is lying across the pipe but nothing is leaking, it can wait until the tree is safe to move. Either way, photograph it for your insurer before anything is cut or shifted.
Can someone come out during a storm?
That depends on the roads. When warnings are high, people are asked to stay out of flooded dips and off low bridges, and that includes plumbers. You will be told honestly if the route is not safe yet, and talked through limiting the damage until it is.
Does insurance cover a burst pipe?
Insurers generally treat sudden water damage, such as a burst, differently from slow leaks and wear. Photograph everything before it is cleaned up, keep damaged items if you can, and contact your insurer early. Some insurers appoint their own plumber, so ask before booking anyone.
The burst is in the road, not on my property. Who fixes it?
eThekwini. Anything leaking between the street main and your meter belongs to the City. Report it, note the reference number, and quote it each time you chase. If your own supply is affected afterwards, we can check your side once the City's repair is done.
After the emergency
Most emergencies turn into one of these once the water is off.
Tell us what has happened
Say what is leaking or backing up, and whether the water is off. We phone back, and the first thing we talk through is stopping the damage.
